HABITAT FOR HUMANITY TACKLES TSUNAMI WITH COMEDIANS

PORTLAND,ME—Most of us think of Habitat for Humanity as a group of local volunteers building free homes for the very needy. But when a tsunami displaced 5 million people (see www.habitat.org) in Southeast Asia December 26th, 2004, Habitat for Humanity began working with local Habitat offices and international partner organizations to assess and respond to short- and long-term shelter needs.

Here in Portland, the Comedy Connection Improv Company, the in-house group at the waterfront landmark, joins Oprah and Good Morning America in raising funds for Habitat for Humanity’s tsunami efforts through the local chapter.

The 7-member troupe will offer a night of improvised comedy—based on audience suggestions, much like the popular program “Whose Line Is It, Anyway?”—along with popular Maine and Massachusetts comics.

Group director Tim Ferrell, a veteran comedy performer and writer for Jon Stewart, says, “it’ll be a great night of laughter, with the added good feelings of helping people in dire need.” The benefit (tickets are $15) takes place Wednesday, February 23, 8 p.m., at The Comedy Connection in Portland, Maine.
